Infertility Options: Support for Starting Your Family
62
Introduction!
I'm Anna Short and, having gone through it myself, I'm dedicated to helping others cope with their infertility in any way that I can.
My Story
I began trying to start a family when I was 34. I am one of many women who have "undefined infertility." While my husband and I never learned the underlying cause of our infertility, after drug therapies, IUI, and finally a cycle of IVF augmented with acupuncture and herbal supplements we were able to conceive and now have a baby boy. I am passionate about reaching out to others who are facing infertility build their knowledge about their options and therefore provide them with the tools to start their family.
While I am not a medical professional, I have done extensive research on infertility, its causes and treatment options. When asked for advice on a couple facing the challenge of infertility, I replied "Do not let your struggles with getting pregnant become the primary focus of your life. Remember to nurture your relationship with your spouse or domestic partner, continue to do work that you love, see movies, read books, and most important -- remember to laugh."

I will be using Hubpages to cover all kinds of infertility information. Break it down: What is Infertility?
Infertility is a condition of the reproductive system in either a male or female that impairs the conception of children. The diagnosis of infertility is usually given to couples who have been trying to get pregnant without contraception for at least 1 year without success. Among the factors necessary for pregnancy are: healthy sperm produced by the man, healthy eggs produced by the woman, fallopian tubes that are open and allow the sperm to reach the egg, the ability of a sperm to fertilize an egg to create an embryo, the ability of the embryo to successfully implant in the woman's uterus, a sufficiently robust embryo, and a hormonal balance within the woman's body that permits the embryo to fully develop inside the uterus. With so many factors in play, it's easy to see how infertility might result, and also how difficult it can be to pinpoint the problem.
While it's often assumed that infertility is a female problem, the truth is that only about 33% of infertility cases are related to factors within the woman alone. Another 33% of cases are based on male factors, and the remainder are from either a combination of factors or for reasons that are never uncovered. In fact, unknown causes account for approximately twenty percent of infertility cases.
It may be reassuring to know that, while high-tech solutions like IVF receive a lot of attention in the media, approximately 85 to 90 percent of infertility cases can be resolved with more conventional therapies, such as non-invasive treatment with medications, or surgical repair of improperly functioning reproductive organs (for example, unblocking of fallopian tubes).

Signs You May Be At Risk for Infertility
Most couples do not realize that they have a fertility problem until they try and fail to conceive over a period of 12 months or more. Because the cause of infertility may be either with the man or the woman, it's important to look at signs of infertility for both members of a couple trying to get pregnant. Being aware of some of these signs can help you get a diagnosis before you spend months trying to get pregnant with no luck.
